    how old is your motherboard? you should be able to boot from a CD-ROM (check your BIOS and set the boot order to CD-ROM first). then pop in XP and you can either wipe clean the drive with XP and start over (while still keeping the Win98 on the other HD), or free up room and get rid of Win 98.

    and good god - don't install old drivers. if your drivers don't work with XP, it says something about the company that manufactures that product - they suck. especially if it's a Umax scanner.

    XP has built-in generic support for scanners. you may not be able to do all the fancy 1-touch scans and shit, but it's better than blowing up your system with old drivers.

    i suggest a Canon Lide 30. it's $99, super small and thin, and they support XP. if a company hasn't updated their drivers to work for XP yet, they are seriously not work spending money on.
