I think its important to remember that one of the most valuable assets of the internet is that you don't have to use 'yor' computer to access it, maybe your target audience has the large-res system you expect them to at home, but do you know if they will be accessing the site from that computer? I'm on-site at the moment and newstoday doesn't fit into the 800*600 res i'm currently afflicted with, so i just scroll over to the PV-AN and leave it there, ignoring all the other content on the page.
