I have a 12" pb w/ a flatscreen 17". You can actually use the 12 inch as an extension of the screen... Like dual display style. i love it. Or like stated above you can also operate with pb closed. In that case yo do need to buy another keyboard.
I'm not sure about old pbs, but if it is mini-DVI then you need miniDVI to dvi adapter, and then you want to but a DVI campat screen. No biggie.
Unfortunate for me I have the old apple flatty which is VGS, so I have mini-DVi to DVI, and then DVI-VGA which cost a 100 bucks. I'd try to avoid that
