freemasons gather differently depending on your country.
if you think all humans gather around interest --- and some of them are not very kind --- you may find that this is not one of the worse "societies" you're probably suffering from.
in fact, freemasons deal mostly with top-level cultural projects with a common charity front. Of course they deal with huge loads of money, power and a inpenetrable tangle of influences but that's just how it works. friends call trustworthy friends.
