one word of advice: when you start your first game and it asks you what your favortite game is, choose mgs1. choosing mgs2 starts you off as a character that is/looks like raiden...
there's also a 'my first time to play' option, but i don't know what that does.
and i agree, mgs2 was a bit hard to stomach, but kojima totally redeemed himself in mgs3. it's probably the only game i'll play until 05. when mgs acid and RE4 comes out.
