you are a student (like myself)..here are some quick bits
1. never get a full version (always purchase from academic version for big discount)
2. for testing stuff..just use the 30 day demos
3. you can get just about anything you need for design on the mac - so don't worry about availabilty etc.
4. enjoy - I love my mac desktop and powerbook.
