It's XP / 2000 - sometimes when you click on a file, Windows decides it's using the file (to preview / display info about the file, or whatever) Then wont let you move, rename, delete or save over it. It's a MASSIVE pain, but the only solution i've found is to reboot.
Thumnails view seems to be the worst for making it happen, so switch the window into a regular icon view, and if you're using XP, minimise the details panel on the left. After that, reebot, go to that window and delete the files.
