    with Hitchcock, its all about style. much like an artist, he added his own special feel to his movies. there are sooo many layers to his films. yes the plot and storyline are there on the surface, but there are also underlying themes that he creates that make the movies so great! it would be way too much to type down. but i took a hitchcock film class and studied all his american films. symbolism with objects, match-cuts with sounds, film structure, psychology, cinematogoraphy, etc all of that played apart in all his "classic" movies. NOBODY was doing this at the time. he approached movie making like an artist, trying to invite the audience to dig deeper into his work.

    you also have to consider that he was under contract with the same dude that put out huge movies like gone with the wind... so he would have to follow hollywood politics. But, if you look into his films you would totally see hints of rebellion to that kind of hollywood style film-making.
