Amazon isnt responsible for this categorization. Its been around long before ecommerce.
So lets start with the man most say is responsible for the genre:
Gram ParsonsThen there is Uncle Tupelo who are credited for the No Depression movement. Which also spawned a magazine. http://www.nodepression.net
Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) and Jay Farrar were the two main songwriters in Uncle Tupelo. When they broke up Tweedy formed Wilco and Farrar formed Son Volt. Its obvious which one had the most success but both are good bands.
Then there is Whiskeytown. They put out some very good records. I like Pnuemonia. Ryan Adams was the front man of Whiskeytown and went on to a solo career. Youve probably heard of him. His debut record Heartbreaker is by far his best and I highly recommend it.
As far as some more recommendations... check out:
The Jayhawks
Lucinda Williams
Paul Westburg
Caitlin Cary (I forget her new band but she was in Whiskeytown)
Iron and Wine
Billy Bragg
some early Beck stuff
Byrdsand all the above mentioned bands are all a good start but there are much more. Its really a broad genre with tons of great bands..
