Althoguh the game IS available in shops and for pre download on Steam (www.steampowered.com). You cannot actually play it yet.
You see when you buy the game it all goes through a central authntication server to combat any piracy issues etc. and because some shops have begun selling the game early, Vivendi, Valve's publisher are telling Valve to stick to the release date and for it to keep it's authentication servers locked until the time of release comes.
Vivendi have been a bitch all the way through production, mainly because they don't like Steam as it sort of completely cuts them out, so I would recommend just downloading it from Steam and then making backups yourself and use thi cover http://www.marcopolo.me.uk/hl2.h…
