I guess a mistake here is when you say that it will bring bad influence when customers will see that 2 companies have similar design. But Internet is so big and the chance for regular customer to find 2 websites with the same design is like to find a needle in haystack. Like other people already told here - Content is a King. All you need is just to have a nice and easy-to-use website. No matter how it is designed.
P.S. This is a businessman's point of view, not designer's.
