72dpi is a myth. My computer screen displays 96dpi. My Palm displays at 320dpi.
Browsers dont render at 72dpi, they render at 1 pixel is mapped to 1 pixel.
All that matters for on screen is the dimension in pixels. A 1600x1200 pixel image will display at 1600x1200 pixels on a 1600x1200 screen, no matter what dpi you have attached to it.
And it will print at about 5.3 inches wide at 300dpi...
