the warranty covers all hardware issues, including those strange white spots on the screen, but not if you scratch it/drop it/bend it/squash it.
They replaced my Powerbook battery after 2 years when it's life dropped to like 20minutes per charge. They even replaced the little rubber feet that fell off ... along with the motherboard, DVD player, and a few other things that went wrong...
Not totally reliable, but with a good warranty...not a huge problem.
The warranty on Powerbooks is always international, (and you have to let them take it away by courier to be fixed). Not sure about other models, and you probably want to ask them about the warranty coverage yourself...
