i own a ibm thinkpad 600x and it hasn't every given me trouble. i recently updated the bios to make it more compatible with redhat 8, but other than that it's a sturdy machine.
one of the key points i like about ibms, other than the architecture and stability, is that they are no-frills laptops. the 600x i have is a tiny smidge over an inch thick, and it's light...not too mention it's just a plain black laptop. no shiny silver arcs or any of that crap they put on dells and gateways.
it is an old p3 500 with 256 meg of ram and a 20 gig drive...and it's lasted me for quite a while.
the one bad thing about ibm notebooks is the lack of an intense graphic card.
if i had the money and needed a laptop i would probably buy a ti-book now and run linux off it...but, at the moment, i'll stick with my thinkpad.
i've heard good things about dell laptops. but, i don't like bulky, huge, heavy laptops. if i wanted to lug my desktop around, i would.
and, sony makes some smooth laptops too...a lot of those are reasonably priced...and they stick pretty decent graphic cards in them.
