I just went shopping for one, so here's my 2cents:
Dell - great reputation, most love theirs, great support (but not the strongest points for repairs, close, though), definitely one of the best 'packages' to buy. They were the cheapest, esp. when you discount the no tax (for mail order)
IBM - great reputation, everyone loves theirs, stellar reliability, definitely one of the best laptops.
Compaq and Toshiba - are always at the top of the customer satisfaction/reliability, but I personally haven't used them .
There was a PC Mag (or World, can't remember) that had a large article comparing reliability, satisfaction, price, support, etc., a few months ago. Its probably up on their site.
The Dell is great, and it was by far the cheapest.
