    STOP.

PDF is a printed format. You should not try to distill PDFs, this leads to all kinda shit.

PDFs aren't really suitable for editing for various long winded reasons that I am too busy to get into - but believe me it ain't.

The correct workflow you need to do use is the following:

    1. Get the document that the PDF was made from.

    2. Edit to taste.

    3. Print to file to obtain your PS file.

    4. Make ALL settings in Distiller and only then drop your PS file onto it to create your PDF.

    5. If you're not happy change the Distiller settings and drop the PS file on it again.
