First off, I think the accidental death of the young lady in Boston is a terrible tragedy. It does happen in other cities, with far more casualies, but even one death is enough to put sports in its proper perspctive. However the Red Sox had nothing to do with anything. They merely provided millions with compelling entertainment and positive memories, and taught us a thing or two about resilience and determination. When drunk idiots get unruly in large numbers, bad things happen. It sucks all around.
As a sidenote, it always amuses me when young white kids start tossing around the term "pig" rather haphazardly. This isn't 1969 in Oakland, and the Panthers never were heroes. I know the Boston Police issued a statement accepting blame, and I know there are crooked cops out there, ones who are in it just for the power trip. And yet, despite the cases we here about in the media, and the ones we don't, I appreciate what the police do for society, by and large, regardless of what NWA says. The police have difficult jobs, and do things I never would want to have to. I know if somebody breaks into my house and I call 911, the cops will be here instantly. I know that when i've needed any kind of assistance, generally the police have been quite helpful. Most of them I've met have been pretty cool. The times I've been mad at the police have also been the moments-ironically-where I was most guilty of something, and just got caught red handed and needed someone to be pissed at. It's taken getting older, and mellowing out, to really see how silly my 20 year old f*** the pigs mentality really was.
No offense to anybody, i just think it's far too convenient to place the blame on one easy target, and forget all the things these people do for us.
As Chris Rock says, if you see a police light flashing in your rearview mirror, pull over. If you lead them on a crazy chase, you probably deserve an ass kicking. When asked questions, speak respectfully. If you have a bag of weed in your pocket, don't be antagonistic. It's not really brain surgery.
