I started working on building a good network nearly 2 years before i went out on my own. I went to industry events, parties, weddings, baby showers, christmas parties and all those stupid events. But, i was able to go as just "an artist" where i wasnt too worried about pimping people for work yet... and rather started building relationships. 2 years later all i had to do was make a few phone calls to let people know i was available, and now im working all over LA at decent firms, and even for disney, geffen and interscope on my own. i got an agent i can use whenever things get slow, but i havent had to use her yet.
my fiance is hooking me up with a long contract at activision doing some game interface design to be in the actual game for true crime 2. im pretty excited about that. but i've gotten him a lot of work in the past couple of years and this is the first thing hes gotten for me.
so far its been 8 months and i manage to keep myself and a few friends busy, too.
also, it helps to have some family connections. i never thought i had any to take advantage of, but recently started digging. i found out my god father has a ton of huge clients in italy and switzerland i can hit up for GIANT contracts... so i sent him over there to start talking about me... and im going over there to do several presentations in the next couple of months. i suggest you ask around your family and let them know what youre doing... you never really know.
