Use it as a backup, do the synchs at night. No speed problem.
Theres quite a few alternatives appearing at the moment: 1GB IMAP mail accounts (which are better than Google for mass-move or synchronizing of mail to a desktop client), and also online backup space (good for scheduled synchronized backups or drag and drop) of around 1GB isnt so expensive anyomore...
