I have had it freeze like that. The way I got around it: if you can, select all layers and copy and paste into a new document. If you have scenes, make sure you copy the frames from those as well. Once you pasted them into a new document. Save. It has worked for me a couple of times. Things are not perfect, you may have to adjust, but at least you will have the core there.
Also, I agree, since this has happened, I do save versions.
