Like anything people always think it is easier, until they have to do it them selves. (Myself included). DVD authoring can be Ridiculously complicated. That is why there are whole companies that do just that. There are always 1000 different reasons why a disc might not work.
From what I know about the best authoring tools, everyone I work with uses Cinarist on a PC. DVD studio pro does rock now. Compressor looks great. Almost as good as a hardware encode.

Designing for DVD does suck due to the size restraints. A lot of distributors want their discs to be "dorm room proof" (actually been said to me). "You should be able to read the menus on a 13" TV from 15 feet away."Good luck with your delivery.
