Well you certainly could've done worse. There are some good bars there, the International is a favorite of mine. It's got a good slew of 'small town' creative shops there, good cafe's (The Hub owned by the same cartel that runs the International), a good high street, good restaurants, and a good old town feel to it. When I say good, I mean good for OC.
If you're looking for a house, you might want to check out the Eichler homes but they are in Orange which is where I was born. Done in a very modern 50's 60's style. Walk into an atrium, massive glass windows, etc. Old town Orange is a classic main street USA vibe.
Santa Ana has a burgeoning arts scene and is a good visit for some culture besides white ghetto culture.
