I lived there for just over a year. Like any place, it's what you make of it - keep an open mind and don't take anything too seriously. All of what you hate and love about life is there. As far as locations go - you're 5 mins from the beach, 2 hours from the desert, 3 hours form the mountains/snow, 3 hours form mexico.
