We asked Rick Santorum to draw those headers... bet you didn't know he was a bang-up hand letterer!
:P
Actually, 99% of it was hand drawn, streamlined and hand set in illustrator.
There was lots of digging around for interesting reference until a general direction was agreed upon...
We looked at everything from obvious stuff llike Diploma to more obscure sources like medieval manuscripts, victorian greeting cards, and decorative calligraphic lettering.
Everyone busted out their own alphabets, and then spun off a bunch of variations and mutations.
If pancakeweb is referring to the the header type in the Fall04 catalog -- most of it was hand drawn by Jeremy Dean (house33).
It was based on earlier stuff that Andy Beach and Mike Perry (midewestisbest) had done in the Early Fall catalog. Mike did the cover logo.
p.s. I wish you hadn't pointed at that "online catalog" page... we still have to update that section (both visually and code-wise) -- it's a third party product that has some limitations. But up until three weeks ago, Mike and I have been the only ones producing the site design and content and packaging and everything else, so a few things have been neglected.
It'll get better when we re-skin the site in Spring.
Hope that was informative...
