The company I used to work for bought all the templates from http://www.helendesign.com for use in mass production stuff and they just took a little tinkering with the code and graphics to prep them for our programmer.

Helendesign has been around for a long time like a ton oof other companies and although they stamp out tons of sites for cheap, once they are bought, a designer is needed to put them together.

It can free up a small business' resources allowing a dessigner to stamp out vast amounts of finished product in less time. While this goes against my principles as a designer, the more money your company makes, the easier it is for them to pay design staff.

This was the case for a good while but once I had enough of these templates preped, and our programmer had written code to automaticly retrieve and plug in content, I was axed.

While these template sites are good for faceless companies not interested in identity and designers must be employed to implement them, could this be automating ourselves out of work?

I think these mass templates will just broaden the gap between really god design and real shite. Making more work for the extremely talented and less work for the mediocre.
