    i just do not believe whatsoever that making the fonts free would change that.

    new fonts are not free. emigre has been and still is the most influential modern foundry. they are anything but free... but they are also very popular and have and will continue to affect our profession.

    and i also dont think that type designers today are trying to compete agains the gills and the frutigers. type design today is something different.
