saville was god because he changed the direction of graphic design from the prevalent pentagram style of corporate witty visual puns that were all content and no style (e.g. a logo for a restaurant being a plate with a bite taken out of it, wtf does that tell you about the ambience of the place and the style of the food?) to stealing and combining visuals from seemingly unrelated genres and reassembling them to create a new context and way of looking at things. a way of looking at things that was sexy and glam and rockstar and all those things the design establishment at the time wasn't.
e.g. appropriating Henri Fantin-Latour's Fleurs for Power Corruption and Lies and using an encyclopaedic image of a soundscan of the moon (actually i can't remember if that's what it was but something like that) for Unknown Pleasures. he couldn't hold down a 9-5 job, his company went bust and New Order lost a little money with every copy of Blue Monday sold (the biggest selling 12" of all time) because of the production costs of that fabulous floppy disk cover but that just confirms in my eyes that he was designing out of passion for ideas rather than being a facsimile slave to corporate market forces in the way so many designers are. i wouldn't have wanted to finance him but i'll always buy into his attitude.
