You shouldnt need to buy anything if the aptop has a wireless card. Does Windows allow you to share the connection? (OSX does).
You could connect them with an ethernet cable, or with Firewire (IP over Firewire is supported in XP and OSX, and seasy to setup, on the Mac you just choose DHCP and thats it.)
