    The Letter as requested.
    .
So Johnson Banks wins the only Gold D&AD for graphic design with their interactive stamps for the Royal Mail. They are the best piece of design we have to offer this year? Honestly, look at them and ask yourself if that's as good as we can do. The D&AD is a very public awards showing the best in design and advertising that year and as much we put its role, its winners and everything else to do with it under the microscope this was something I read with dismay.

There's nothing wrong with the stamps as such, they are OK but I honestly feel you could have seen them in any graduate show this year. The student would have got a first, mum would be proud and the person would have probably got a student D&AD award. We complain that graphic design doesn't share the same value in the public eye as it's cousins of fashion, architecture and product design and then we give the top design award to those stamps and nothing else. We, it has to be said, are doing ourselves no favours.

It's time for awards that you don't have to pay to enter and that truly recognise all the great pieces of work we all see, otherwise we shall stay the lowly runt cousin handing out prizes to our mates for average work.
