For design work if you can bite the bullet or somehow make the 15 inch a possibility i would definately go for it.
The 12 is nice too just load it up with ram, unless you doing 3d work or games the video card should be fine on the 12"
As for an external monitor, that would work fine, its does for me except i find the output is not NEAR as sharp as it is on the lcd, or as sharp as it is when its connected to my windows machine.
I don't know what the deal with that is, has anyone else found using an external monitor on their powerbook to be not very crisp?
