Be careful with these cheap camera stores. A lot of them will sell you 'naked' camera (calling it non-US version or something) and then offer you charger and cables for high price. The safest of the cheapest seem to be www.buydig.com and www.beachcamera.com which I think are the same store branded twice.
I just bought a used canon D30 on ebay for $612 with a $250 worth lens. The camera is only 3.3MP, but easily outperforms most 4-5MP ones. Aside from color responsiveness and 'real camera' operation, the thing dSLR's are definitely better at is noise levels. You can shoot low light venues like club concerts at ISO 400 (or 800) with good results while a compact camera would give you images covered with beautiful rgb grain.
