Well, I can't say I've got quite the experience fatoe has in this, but let's say you've shot some black paint on to white paper and scanned it in... you can make it usable in photoshop by applying the Multiply compositing mode to it over some other image so that only your black marks will be visible. You'll most likely want to use 'levels' to sharpen it up and get rid of any low-level grays. that's a pretty easy way to get it started.
play with it, but don't get stuck with it. You like nopattern and fatoe because of contrast, smart composition, and interesting content. That, and they rock their illustrations. So pay attention to that shiz, too. :)
