Most people I know from abroad are on the H-1B. I think (and I could be wrong) it makes it easier to get the mighty Green Card.
However, working remotely is the greatest thing you can do. The only catch is you'd have to fly out of the country every six months and renew the visa.
After a year or so, the immigration guys at LAX may give you a hard time, but people have done it.
One quick warning though - the time difference between LA and the UK is brutal, especially if your clients are early risers or finance types. Keep that in mind if you're out partying it up with some models and have a half an hour commute home at 3am.
