Thats not the only way to do it...The spam catching-capability of mail apps is getting better. Also you can get your own domain's email outsourced to hosts such as everyone.net, so it goes through their virus and spam checkers before it even hits the second line of defense at your mail app's spam checker... It works pretty well...
