Guys. I understand your experiences, concerns, and realities about cheap hosting. For many of your reasons is why I chose to build (mt) Media Temple .NET. I used to be a web designer and host sites for clients so I know your many of your situations intimately. Choosing the right hosting company isn't the end of the world, but can the make the needed difference in your overall design "product" and "experience" for your customers, and can save you many headaches. Many of us just want to find that one hosting company, and stop searching aimlessly for a company that's going to be responsible, reliable, credible, and around in the future.
(mt) does not have all of the crazy disk space features and rock bottom prices like the other cheap hosts. Rarely do we find customers even needing 10% of their space, so rather, we choose to invest in extremely fast and reliable hardware (see our HP success story). This approach (proven over the last 3 years) insures timely and reliable execution of your disk operations, unlike massive "white label" cheapo drives. Not only this but our disk systems are RAID configured, and have real backup systems. (not many of the other hosts can really make that statement sadly). I believe it is a "get what you pay for market", and yes agreeably there are exceptions to that rule.
