Don't throw unused designs away.
If they are fleshed out enough, they can still be portfolio pieces. I have put up a section on my site that is called "digital concepts".
It is a repository of work that the client didn't like, but tends to impress other clients with ow out there you are capable of going. . .
I just did that this past friday with a prospective employer.
You can do that, or like you said, recycle it. You still did it and who's to know. . .
