It's called pyramid marketing. Though the technical definition may not match with what this company is doing, it's the same thing.
You purchace a service and convince several other people to purchace that service or various other services on top of that, you sell them an idea that they can get something really great out of it (in this case, an iPod). They, in turn, do the same to several other people. You aren't making any money because you aren't getting a kickback for selling someone on AOL for broadband like you may be by this company is. That's the only way it TECHNICALLY isn't a pyramid scheme. Even still...
