I don't recall the last time I used a gif file, png's are supported more than enough to rely on them. Alpha channels can occasionally cause issues, but as long as you're saving out as a PNG-24, as previously mentioned, you should be fine. PNG-8 with alpha channels will sort of work sometimes in modern browsers, but 24's always will - just watch that file size. I remember reading something about IE mishandling PNG's that didn't have either a height and/or width of at least 70 pixels, but I've never fully confirmed this myself.
