    In case you ever find yourself in the position where you NEED to use a gif to achieve transparency and a PNG won't work, here's why it was causing a problem:

    anti-aliasing. GIFs can't display translucency, if you have any pixels that aren't 100% on or 100% off, they display as white. That's what all the nasty fuzz around the logo was. The best way to get around this is to put the logo on a background color similar to the color it'll be displayed on (ie: if it's a brownish texture, put it on brown), then use your magic wand tool with the tolerence set to 0 and erase the areas that are still solid brown.
