mainly due to fear pixelbreaker. and wanting to believe that they are on the side of the "good guys"...
fear of the "enemy" - don't forget how much fear was hyped up before the war to justify pre-emptive strikes: the 45 minute attack claim, the false links to al-Qaeda, the certain threat of WMDs.
cheney et all have exploited and encouraged a climate of fear worldwide, when people are scared they are much less likely to question.
