Maybe play with a subtle gray bg for the boxes to make it pop.
I'd agree about losing those vert blue line/shadow thingies.
Ideally, I would have liked to go directly to the portfolio, not to an info page with another port link, then popups....but....
So, overall, I like it alot. The changes are small, and if you don't do them, not a huge deal. I think your averagre joe would find this site easy to use and easy on the eyes.
I am not sure exactly what Welded was refering to on the bg of that site (it made me feel a little uneasy), but I did something similar on mine, although I couldn't see something like that on your site.
