  I've had this problem at home.

  The first reason was the I was using ClearType on windowsXP, turned that off and it was fine, second problem I had was the my preferences weren't having any effect, and I realised it was because the default codePage *language* on my machine is set to traditional chinese, once I switched it to English UK/US it's fine.
