As someone born and bred (and still living) in Los Angeles, I would seriously recommend living either in West LA / Mid Wilshire or Silverlake / Los Feliz. While Silverlake is a bit farther from most stuff, the rents are more reasonable.
On the other hand, I'm renting a LARGE (1200 sq foot) 2 Bedroom in Palms (3 blocks from Sony) for $1100.
BTW, there's at least one apt open in my building (small apt building, 12 units, secure parking, gated) and I think it's going for $800 or so. Awesome location, walking distance to tons of great restaurants, places like Sony, close to MTV, MGM, etc. and the art cluster in SM.. drop me an email I'll call me landlord (good guy)
