The client may have thought that going directly to pufeta would be more efficient but in fact, the client was guilty of a breach of protocol. Your employer blew up abut it, sure, and it certainly sounds as though HE overreacted (being somewhat insecure, I shouldn't wonder) but it is completely appropriate for him to protect his client relationship. He could have handled it better, that's all.
