the point with IMAP is that your laptop and your online storage are always kept in synch, so you can work with your mail offline, then it synchs on connect, and you can work offline on multiple computers (like most office networks), and you can just drag email form one IMAP account to another...
Obviously you would have to be connected for the Google mail functions to work though...
