I want to access my Gmail using Entourage (or Outlook Express whatever), and have the mail synchronized between the server and my laptop (and it can synchronize to multiple computers) Thats IMAP. I have IMAP access on a few other providers (including .Mac)
With POP you can access your account and download mail to just one computer, and it is deleted from the server (unless you tell it not to, in which case you can download to multiple computers but there is no synchronization across all the computers).
