in iTunes (at your work or home computer), click the leftmost button in the lower right-hand corner. it should be a button with an iPod logo on it. in the window that pops up, choose the last radio button "Manually manage songs and playlists".
You can now plug your iPod into your work computer and use its iTunes as a jukebox for your iPod. Not only that, but you can copy songs from any other computer's iTunes into your iPod.
Now, when you get home and you want to copy these songs to your home computer, use a program called Podworks. You can get it from versiontracker.com . It will copy the songs from the iPod into the folder you choose (smartest thing is your iTunes music folder). Then just import the songs into iTunes and you're done.
