Forget about the 8MP compact cameras, they produce much noisier images than the 6MP dslr models. It's just that the market required number 8 now.
I'd go for Nikon D70 or one of the Canon bodies :10D/300D (branded digital rebel in the US). Although feature-wise 300D is a dumbed down version of 10D, there is a russian guy named Wasia who's been working on the firmware and managed to unlock most of the hidden options. The 'wasiaware' is very popular all around the world and the change is fully reversible, so you don't have to worry about losing warranty.
