i was also just in DC, and standing in the (very moving) lincoln memorial reading the ghettysburg address i was amazed at how far aetheists have taken the separation of church and state issue.
religion, like aetheism, shouldn't be rammed down anyone's throat. that being said, god and faith are undeniably prominent in all of our forefathers' writings and it would behoove all of us to respect that.
