The ruins of Chichen-Itza are a great experience. ( about 2 hrs inland) but Tulum is great because it has a beach.
Also the most extensive span of half-submerged tunnels are in the Yucatan/Mayan riviera. Go tubing and or diving in them. The gods will smile upon you. You can enter them around the Xel-Ha area.
